theater" celebration of medieval life and times at the North Carolina
Renaissance Faire! Walk into the gates and enter a medieval or
renaissance village and become a part of it for the day. Meat lords
and ladies, knights and maidens, pirates, fairies, or royalty; play games,
and enjoy live music, dancing, storytelling, puppetry, magic, sword
fighting, and jousting. (Watch the knights on horseback as the jester
gallops alongside on a little pony!) There is always something new to
discover as you step back in time at the North Carolina Renaissance Faire!

show is sponsored by the Tar Heel Gem & Mineral Club and includes 29
dealers plus Club areas of demonstration, silent auction, geodes and
hospitality. Finished jewelry, rough minerals, fossils, geodes, related
books and tools on display and for sale. Familiarize your children with
the Lapidary Arts. FREE admission. Grab bags with rocks and minerals,
some containing a faceted gem, available for kids. The club will sell
and cut geodes and offer an on-going Silent Auction with new items every
hour. One large area is set up to demonstrate faceting, cabachons,
Opals, chainmaking, wirewrap, and gem trees.

For children ages 8 and under; 10am sharp. Bring a basket or bag for
gathering eggs! Children will be divided into age groups to search in
separate areas for 1,000 eggs stuffed with candy. There will also be
ten special prize eggs to be redeemed for special prizes such as stuffed
animals. Also planned for the event are games, contests, spelling
bees, egg races, and "bowling for bunnies" events. Free; donations

Editor's note: Okay, so with a
bunch of little kids (and children in school as well) this event is not
for us, but we can at least dream, right? HATCHfest sounds like a
very creative and inspirational event for people who have the logistical
flexibility and ability to attend :)

145th Anniversary of the Largest Troop Surrender of the Civil War at Bennett
Place State Historic Site in Durham, NC.
Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18, 2010 10 am - 4 pm.
Surrender Reenactment and 141st Anniversary Commemoration. In April,
1865, Confederate General Johnston surrendered to Union General Sherman at
the Bennett Farm near the Durham Station, the largest troop surrender of the
Civil War. Visit Bennett Place and meet the generals who convened here and
signed the papers, which made them prominent figures in history.
Re-enactors will describe military life and
the activities of the common soldier. Various domestic skills will be
presented to evoke the home life of James and Nancy Bennett. Costumed
interpreters will portray the Bennett family, and a surrender negotiation
vignette between Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and Gen. William T. Sherman will be
performed throughout the day. Living History interpreters demonstrate
soldier life and home front activities. A memorial ceremony will be held at
the Unity Monument on Sunday. Living history programs will be held
throughout the weekend. Donations gratefully accepted. FREE.
