Chapel Hill - Carrboro- Durham - Orange County
Spotlight on ARTISTS & ART
for Children

Editors' note: The Chapel Hill/Triangle area is home to a vibrant Arts community. Theater, Music, Visual Arts, Fiber Arts, Sculptures are all around us, from the WOWIE wonderful & fun ArtsCenter in Carroboro, to the annual sculpture exhibit in the NC Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill, to Sunday live music on the lawn at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro, the outdoor sculptures and fountains in Carroboro, to the many local festivals with a focus on the arts, to birthday parties and after school at Cely's House, to the numerous excellent art museums (Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Duke).  Children are able to live with works of art all around them in this community.  We also never cease to be impressed with the local artists and writers/authors; musicians, and all-around creative and interesting folks who live and work among us.  Here we will highlight some of the people who contribute so much to the arts in our community.

Shoofly: An Audiomagazine for Children
Published/Created/Developed by a
local Carroboro, NC husband & wife team

Beginning in 1994, Carrboro, NC residents / husband and wife team Jack Nestor and Arlene Furman have published an impressive and delightful series of multiple-award-winning audio magazines for children and families called Shoofly, available as MP3 downloads or CDs at www.shooflyaudio.com (888) 929-9401 or (919) 968-7846.  Each of the Shoofly Audio "magazine" recordings on CD featured stories, poems, and songs for kids, like an old-time radio show that will keep the whole family entranced.  (One critic described Shoofly Audio as a "moveable feast for the wee literati.")  Great for long car drives or just some quiet time at home together with your kids.

Description from the www.shooflyaudio.com website:

"Our Shoofly series (children's stories, storytelling, kid's music, and poetry) is a unique award-winning audio publication. Each exciting CD or MP3 download boasts an eclectic and fun-filled mix of age-appropriate children's music, stories, and poetry (45 to 60 min in length) and is usually comprised of 4 stories and 4 songs, interwoven with lively musical interludes and fun poetry. You and your child will enjoy the variety of voices, music, and moods - Shoofly Audio for Children is a literary feast for the whole family!"

Read more about this amazing husband and wife team and the life-altering challenges they have overcome, including Arlene Furman's loss of her eyesight after a devastating illness in 1999.  (The couple lost their third child in the ninth month of pregnancy as a result of this illness.)  Their dedication to bringing wonderful, quality audio entertainment to children is inspiring.  We encourage our readers to visit www.shooflyaudio.com, sample the audio recordings and purchase Shoofly CDs (or downloads) to enjoy with your children over and over again.  SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS & a wonderful local family with your purchase, and spend quality time enjoying the Shoofly stories/music/poetry with the children in your life.
