Ganyard Hill Farm provides Elementary School Field Trips and Family Farm Amusement and has become a popular annual Fall destination for many local schools and families. On Saturdays, Oct. 22 and 29 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 30 at 4:30 p.m., prepare to come face to face with some of the most terrifying sights of the night sky as Morehead Planetarium and Science Center brings you "Scare-o-lina Skies" in the Star Theater -- a special, extra-scary version of Carolina Skies.

MPSC's skywatching instructor, Amy Sayle, will be presenting the two night shows and giving a first-hand look at some of the most graphic tales from a variety of cultures from all over the world and even some from modern science as well, like the phenomenon of black holes.

The night shows are only for children 12 and up, as their nature is intended for an older audience. The Oct. 30 show is more family oriented and kid-friendly. Standard planetarium show admission prices apply ($5.25

The “News of Orange” and Churton Street Realty will co-sponsor a costume contest for kids, adults and pets next to Churton Street Realty at "Parking Lot Park (near the Police Station). Pupkiss will host a dog costume contest on the sidewalk in front of their store on the 100 block of S. Churton St. at 7 PM. Pet treats will be given out.

The Orange County Historical Museum will join in the fun by hosting “Trunk or Treat.” Children will be invited to search for candy and prizes in the museum’s traveling trunks” from 6 – 9 PM at 201 N. Churton St. The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough is hosting its popular “Haunted Hillsborough Guided Walking Tour” on Oct. 28th and 29th.Hour-long tours will take visitors through the town’s old colonial streets and past some of the haunted homes, churches, and cemeteries. Learn of the many fascinating events and people, especially of its past residents who seem to refuse to leave. Tickets are $5 for children (ages 5-14) and $10 for adults and can be purchased at 150 E. King St. or by calling 732-7741. Reservations are recommended.

Riverside Cafe will sponsor a Pumpkin Carving Contest. Particpants must submit their carved pumpkin with contact information to Riverside Cafe, located across the old Churton St. bridge on Exchange Club Park Lane, by Thursday, October 27th. All entries will be displayed along the Old Churton St. Bridge and will be judged by the public the evening of Oct. 28th.

"The gentle woodlands of Chatham and Wake Counties turn into some very spooky places the evening of Saturday, 29 October 2005, when the New Hope Valley Railway runs its special Halloween Trains! Join us that evening for some good fun, and feel free to come in costume. Many things are afoot in our woods from the Ghost Locomotive to the Headless Brakeman to the Vampire’s Grave to the Witch's Path where the three evil sisters boil up their potions as the trains pass. Enjoy all of the fun and festivities celebrating Halloween with the sometimes haunted train crew.

Trains will operate at 4:00PM, 5:15PM, 6:30PM, and 7:45PM. (Note that the 4:00 and 5:15 runs take place during daylight hours.)

Pumpkin Run 4K hosted by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA
Saturday, Oct. 29, 5pm.
The Pumpkin Run 4K (2.5-mile) trail race will be held as a single race (men and women running together), on the scenic woodland trails and rolling hills north of Horace Williams Airport in Chapel Hill. According to the website, "The registrations for this year's Pumpkin Run are coming in fast - much faster than anticipated. Sign up soon if you want to run the race!"
Location: University Woodlands Trail at Carolina North off of Municipal Road in Chapel Hill, NC (with registration, parking, and bathroom facilities at the YMCA on Airport Road). Be sure to check out the YMCA's map of the course and how they created it.

Carrboro Halloween Carnival
Carrboro's Halloween Carnival is held each year on October 31st. from 6 until 8:30 pm at the Carrboro Town Commons. Ghosts and goblins of all ages come out for lots of free games and fun! Best costumes are awarded with prize ribbons, and activities include a cake walk, howling at the moon, games, prizes, and many other fun-filled activities. The whole family can enjoy this annual event.
