Indoor Play
From September through Spring, Toddler Play Indoor Playtime is available at the following locations/times in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.  (A great idea especially when the weather is cold or rainy!):

Chapel Hill Community Center Parent-Tot Morning Extravaganza (in the Community Center gymnasium)
Monday - Friday, 10am - Noon through April 21; Free.
Toys are available for toddlers to play with, and you can also bring your own toys that won't scratch the floor.

Carrboro Century Center Toddler Preschool Playtime (for children 5 years old and younger) in the Century Hall.
Tuesdays, 10am - 11:30am through May 16 (no playtime on March 7); $2 per child
Tumbling mat, toys, and music provided; also some directed activities.

Chapel Hill Community Center and Park
Located at 120 South Estes Drive, (across from the Main Post Office and University Mall; 1 1/2 miles NE of downtown Chapel Hill ).

  Great park for meeting other moms and kids!  The playground has numerous play sets, swings, slides, monkey bars, tire swings with a springy, soft surface underneath, and is surrounded by lots of green space and a lovely rose garden with brick walking paths (The Gene Stroud Community Rose Garden).  There is a bicycle path around the park.  Multipurpose recreation center also offers indoor swimming, indoor climbing wall, indoor and outdoor basketball, outdoor volleyball, summer camp, bocce ball, compost demonstration site, walking trails, sun deck, and picnic tables.  The multipurpose room, gym, and climbing wall are available for rental.  For more info, call 968-2790 or go to www.chapelhillparks.org and click on "facility rentals."

When it's cold outside (from September - May), kids can run around and play in the Community Center Gym during Parent-Tot Time, Mondays - Fridays from 10am-12pm.

Hargraves Community Center and Park

  Facilities include a playground and picnic area, tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, softball field, volleyball court, and outdoor swimming pool during summer months.

The Hargraves Technology Center provides a place to promote computer learning for children, teens, and adults in the Northside Community of Chapel Hill and surrounding areas.

Homestead Park (aka the "Dinosaur Park") and Chapel Hill Skate Park and Batting Cages; Homestead Dog Park

From Airport Road, turn west onto Homestead Road, take a right onto Northern Park Drive which leads to Homestead Park (located 3 miles North of downtown Chapel Hill, 2 blocks west of Airport Rd. off Homestead Rd.  (919) 929-9031
  Playground  A favorite meeting place for area playgroups, the "Dinosaur Playground" is tucked away in a woodsy area at a good distance from the Homestead parking lot areas.  (The trees offer some shady areas in the Summer.)  The playground features a friendly dinosaur slide, swings, and an additional large play set with slides, tunnels, and climbing bars.  There are also picnic tables and benches in the shade.  Bathroom facilities are open in the Spring and Summer.  The restroom facilities are not open in the Winter (closed from October to May), so plan accordingly if you have little ones!   

 

  Skate Park  10,000 square foot skate park with ramps.  Residents of Chapel Hill/Orange County:  Membership $5; all day skate $5 with membership; all day skate $7 without membership.  Non-Residents:  membership $8; all day skate $12 without membership.  Helmet rental $2.  Hours: Tues-Fri.  3-9 pm; Sat 12-9 pm; Sun 12-6 pm. (Open at 1pm on Teacher Workdays) 

 

  Batting Cage  The Homestead Batting Cage has six stations. Hours: Tues-Fri.  3-9 pm; Sat 12-9 pm; Sun 12-6 pm. (Open at 1pm on Teacher Workdays).

Jones Park
Located @ 1 1/2 miles South of downtown Chapel Hill off Columbia St. before Fordham BLvd.  The Park is 1/2 mile E. of Columbia St. on Holland Dr.

Lincoln Gymnasium & Arts Center
Located on 750 S. Merrit Mill Road, Chapel Hill, at the former Lincoln School; 1 mile SE of downtown Chapel Hill.

  Pottery Studio  Over 2000 square feet of workspace, eight pottery wheels, three kilns.  Classes for both children and adults.  Also summer camp for children ages 5-8 and children ages 9-12.
  Gymnasium:  The Lincoln Center Gym offers indoor basketball Mon-Fri , 5-9 pm, Sat. 9am-5pm, and Sun. 1-6pm.

Umstead Park
Located 1 1/2 miles NE of downtown Chapel Hill west of Airport Rd, on Umstead Rd.
  Climbing structures and sand to play in; bridge, stream and path through the woods.  Better for older kids because it is not contained/fenced, and the stream is accessible from the play area.
