In prior years, the Morehead Planetarium used to hold a special Perseids skywatching session (from around 9 to 11 p.m.) on the night of the Perseid Meteor Showers at Jordan Lake's Ebenezer Church Recreation Area (Near U.S. 64). However, we can't find anything on the Morehead schedule for this year (2012). But you can still check out the perseid meteor showers on your own. The Perseid meteor showers appear in the area of the constellation Perseus in the north-eastern sky. Check out this website for more info on the best Perseid viewing times for August 2012: http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/earthskys-meteor-shower-guide More about the Perseids (from http://www.seasky.org/astronomy/astronomy_calendar_2012.html:) "The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at their peak. This year's peak occurs on the morning of August 12, but you may be able to see some meteors any time from July 23 - August 22. The waning gibbous moon will provide some interference in the early morning, so the best viewing will be in the evening before it rises. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus. Look to the northeast after midnight." Read more about the Perseid Meteor Shower: http://stardate.org/nightsky/meteors/
